Military Hearing Loss
Understanding Military Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)
If you have served in the British Armed Forces, both men and women face unique challenges during their service, one of which is the risk of noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL). This condition often arises from prolonged exposure to loud noises encountered during training exercises and operational duties. Activities such as operating heavy machinery, engaging in live fire exercises, or working in proximity to aircraft can contribute to this damage.
Common Symptoms of Military Hearing Loss
Military personnel are susceptible to various symptoms of hearing loss due to their exposure to loud noises and hazardous environments during service. Recognising these symptoms is crucial for seeking timely medical attention and pursuing compensation claims.
NIHL occurs when the delicate structures of the inner ear are damaged by excessive sound levels. The symptoms may vary in severity and can include, Tinnitus, Difficulty Understanding Speech, Muffled Hearing, Sensitivity to Sound,
Most Common Types of Military Hearing Loss
In the UK, military personnel can experience different types of hearing loss due to their exposure to high noise levels, combat situations, and other factors associated with military service. The main types of military hearing loss include:
Noise-Induced Hearing Loss (NIHL)
This is the most common type, resulting from prolonged exposure to loud noises, such as gunfire, artillery, and aircraft noise. NIHL can be permanent and may vary in severity.
Tinnitus
Though not a type of hearing loss per se, tinnitus is often associated with hearing loss in military personnel. It manifests as a ringing, buzzing, or hissing sound in the ears and can be a symptom of NIHL.
Conductive Hearing Loss
This occurs when there is a problem in the outer or middle ear that prevents sound from being conducted to the inner ear. It can be caused by ear infections, fluid buildup, or physical injuries.
Acoustic Trauma
This is a specific type of sensorineural hearing loss caused by a single, intense sound, such as an explosion, which can cause immediate damage to the hearing structures.
Sensorineural Hearing Loss
This type involves damage to the inner ear (cochlea) or the auditory nerve. It is often permanent and can result from exposure to loud noises or age-related factors.
I was very impressed with the service I received from Bluefields Medical
"I arranged for Bluefields to visit me at work in their mobile hearing van. The hearing test was conveniently conducted in work's car park during my lunch break. It turns out I did have hearing damage, and I now have a claim with a hearing loss specialist solicitor they introduced me to."
